Power of 10Sen empowers children to change lives, 10sen at a time. We provide relief for communities affected by war, conflict, and disaster.
The Problem:
A majority of young children are severely affected by ongoing violence in Gaza. According to UNICEF, approximately 320,000 children in Gaza are aged under 5, including about 40,000 infants under 6 months of age. 50,000 of these children are malnourished. Conflict in Gaza has resulted in 884 dead (257 children and 93 women), 3,860 are injured (1,333 children and 587 women) and 3 hospitals hit by the bombings.
Gaza Dibela’s Objective:
The charity drive seeks to provide humanitarian aid for children in Gaza while effectively instilling a culture of giving and peace among the children of Malaysia.
The Strategy:
Donation boxes (DIY packages) were sent to every participating kindergarten, school, university, and organization. Every student was encouraged to donate at least 10sen everyday in the period of 25th February – 12th May 2009. The donations collected were channeled to MRCS International Relief Fund which will be utilized in the MRCS humanitarian assistance program in Gaza.
The Outcome:
11,000 coin boxes were distributed 300 schools and 1500 kindergartens participated in Power of 10Sen: Gaza Dibela. About 400,000 school children and 40,000 kindergarteners participated altogether. RM143,730.10 (approx. $48,000USD) was raised between February 25th and May 12th 2009 by Malaysian children and youth alone. The funds collected were channeled to the MRCS International Relief Fund, which is already actively carrying out humanitarian assistance to the victims of armed conflicts in Gaza.
MRCS contributions help rehabilitate the victims to recover their quality of life. MRCS is providing severely needed assistance to the vulnerable Gaza community. MRCS is approaching this rehabilitation in a holistic manner not only to provide medical assistance but also addressing the physiological, livelihood and rehabilitation of the victims. The assistance includes:
• Prosthetic artificial limb for 350 physically disabled people in the Gaza strip
• Physiotherapy
• Prosthetic fitting
• Supplying prosthetic shoe
• Psychosocial support for patient and family
• Livelihood project
