Synopsis:
Power of 10Sen: Say Bye to Poverty was launched in 2008 in conjunction with Malaysia’s Global Peace Festival and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, October 17th. It is Power of 10Sen’s pioneer project, aimed at alleviating world poverty and hunger through the small monetary contributions from all of Malaysia’s children and youth. RM30,127.61 (approx $8,000USD) was raised between September 12th – October 17th from school children and university students alone. All funds were channeled to the Malaysian Children Welfare Council, the International Relief Friendship Foundation (Cambodia), and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.
Every year, an estimated 9.7 million children under the age of five die from largely preventable causes. Some are directly caused by illness such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. Others are caused by indirect causes including conflict and HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition, poor hygiene and lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation contribute to more than half of these deaths.
Say Bye to Poverty’s Objective:
The objective of Power of 10Sen: Say Bye to Poverty is to provide young Malaysians the opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty. It is a project whose goal is to create awareness among students about the poverty and hunger that exists in this world and to make them realize that even a small gift of 10sen can go a long way.
The Strategy:
Donation boxes were set up in kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities throughout the Klang Valley. From September 13th – October 17th groups of Power of 10Sen volunteers comprised of university students conducted road-shows at these schools to collect funds and talk about the concept and importance of the eradication of poverty.
The Outcome:
RM30,127.61 (approx $8,000USD) was raised between September 12th – October 17th from school children and university students alone. All funds were channeled to the Malaysian Children Welfare Council, the International Relief Friendship Foundation (Cambodia), and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. Altogether, 15,000 students participated in the month-long campaign.
